White-noise machines create a steady background sound that may help some people mask traffic, conversations and other interruptions. They provide sound masking—not active noise cancellation—and do not treat insomnia or guarantee better sleep.

A review of 38 studies rated the evidence for sleep benefit as very low quality, with mixed results. We therefore assess practical features and room fit, not clinical promises.

Our quick picks

White-noise machine comparison

We did not purchase or physically test these machines. This editorial selection considers public specifications and manuals, sound options, controls, timers, power, portability and safety-relevant features researched on August 21, 2026. Availability and specifications can change; commissions do not determine inclusion or ranking.

01

Best overall sound selection

LectroFan EVO

Offers 22 non-looping fan, noise and ocean sounds, precise volume control, memory and a one-to-eight-hour timer in a compact bedside unit.

Best for: Adult bedrooms with traffic, neighbors or other irregular environmental noise.

Watch for: It must stay plugged in and has no battery or light. Avoid using the headphone output overnight; keep the speaker at the lowest effective volume.

02

Best natural fan sound

Yogasleep Dohm Classic

Uses a real internal fan rather than a digital recording, with two speeds and a rotating shell that changes tone and airflow sound without an app.

Best for: People who prefer a steady mechanical fan sound and very simple physical controls.

Watch for: It only produces fan-sound variations, has no timer and uses a 120-volt wall plug intended for the United States and Canada.

Best budget-friendly option

Magicteam Sound Machine

Combines 20 fan, noise, nature and melody options with 32 volume levels, memory, one-to-five-hour timers and continuous playback.

Best for: A first sound machine, guest bedroom or desk where straightforward controls matter most.

Watch for: It has no internal battery and not every sound is white noise. The maker does not publish a clear maximum dBA figure, so high volume should not be assumed safe.

Best portable pick

Yogasleep Hushh 2

A rechargeable USB-C model with six sounds, adjustable night light, button lock, 30-, 60- and 120-minute timers and a flexible clip for travel.

Best for: Travel and supervised portable use by families who need a small cordless option.

Watch for: Battery life varies with volume and light. For infants, keep the device and cord out of the crib, as far away as practical, at the lowest effective volume and for limited periods.

How to choose without the hype

  • Sound type: compare white, pink or brown noise, fans and nature sounds for comfort—no color is clinically superior for everyone.
  • Volume and controls: look for gradual steps that let you find the lowest level that masks the distraction.
  • Timer and continuous mode: decide whether the unit should turn off after you fall asleep or remain on.
  • Power and travel: check wall power, USB-C, stated battery life, size and button lock.
  • Lights and apps: confirm that displays can turn fully off and whether important features depend on an account, subscription or data collection.
The best machine is the one that masks the distraction at the lowest comfortable volume—and can be returned if its sound does not suit you.

How to use it responsibly

Hearing and safety: Use the lowest effective volume and keep the machine away from your head. Distance, volume and duration all affect exposure. Confirm that smoke, carbon-monoxide and other important alarms remain audible; do not use headphones or earbuds for continuous noise all night.

For infants, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises placing the machine as far away as practical, using the lowest volume and limiting duration. Never leave the machine, clip or cord inside a crib or within reach. Persistent tinnitus, hearing difficulty or ongoing sleep problems deserve professional evaluation.
